Design of structures and related works management
The project for the two new buildings for advanced research, the IES (Environmental Research Building) and the IHCP (Life Science Building), is part of the strategic development plan for the Ispra site of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC), and includes the construction of offices and laboratories for biology and environmental analysis.
The buildings are configured as two three-story buildings plus a semi-underground floor intended for office and laboratory use. The large courtyards have roofs in a shed metal structure with a span of 28m on one side and in a laminated wood structure with a span of 18m on the other.
The structure is built in the traditional way with pillars and bracing walls in reinforced concrete and floors in predalles.
The foundations consist of a continuous slab 1m thick resting on 883 unreinforced piles, made with CFA technology. An overhead metal walkway and a series of underground tunnels connect the two buildings to each other and to the other adjacent buildings on the site.
