Structural works design and construction management

The project involves the functional redevelopment of the pre-existing industrial building constructed in the 1930s, consisting of a reinforced concrete structure, with pillars, overhead crane beams and roof trusses equipped with sheds.

Given the state of conservation of these structures and the functional needs envisaged in the new project, it was decided to substantially reconstruct the load-bearing framework of the building, retaining only the pillars, which were reinforced for this purpose with metal plating.

The architectural project included the insertion of an intermediate floor in the new layout with the requirement of high overloads that required the adoption of significant metal framework structures.

The new roof was then built with the provision of metal shed trusses in exact reproduction of the pre-existing ones.

Resistance to horizontal actions, in particular seismic action, was obtained with the insertion of stairwells-elevators and shear walls in reinforced concrete and with the aid of “Shock Transmission Units” which allowed the closure of a construction joint, avoiding the hammering effect under earthquakes and at the same time allowing free movement due to thermal deformation.

Particular design effort was required for the foundation works, largely planned on micropiles, to allow the execution of the necessary underpinnings of the existing plinths in the presence of the overlying roof and to allow the formation of a previously non-existent basement level.
